Product Review: Syntrax Nectar Whey
Before You Even Read This: Since first posting this review I’ve tried Nectar Whey a few more times and I have to say aside from my other gripes below I’ve also experienced a fair amount of nausea when taking this product both before and after my workouts. Maybe it’s just not compatible with my system, but buyer beware.
Product Type: Whey Protein Isolate
Price on Allstarhealth.com: $26.45 for 2.1 lbs./36 servings
My Opinion: I’ve heard tales of Syntrax Nectar’s mind-blowing taste for some time now, so I decided to pick up a tub of “Apple Ecstasy” for my wife as a way to get her some more protein as painlessly and as deliciously as possible. And after trying it for myself a couple of times, I can say this is definitely not the “Best Tasting Protein on the Market” as the packaging says. The first time I had it I really did think it was good, almost tasted like I was drinking a fruity martini instead of a protein drink. But since then I’ve come to find that Nectar has this very strange chemical twang to it, so that while you’re drinking it it’s just okay but when it goes down it leaves this funky aftertaste much similar to – and I kid you not – nachos. Seriously. It’ll leave the taste of nachos in your mouth, or at least it does with me. And while altogether I definitely am a fan of nachos and there are certainly stranger aftertastes you could experience, it’s just weird. That and the fact that it foams up something big time if you put it in a shaker bottle (half of it turns to bubbles) means I can’t really recommend this drink. I fully concede there might be better flavors out there, but at this price I’m not a big believer in coming back for more if you’ve been disappointed the first time.
(+): I like the calorie to protein ratio of 90/23, and the taste is not especially offensive.
(-): The taste is just weird, not what I’d have expected considering how many raves I’ve heard from people on the bulletin boards and customer reviews.
